About The Project

Elite Scholars emerged from a simple belief: no deserving student should abandon their dreams due to financial constraints. Founded by a group of passionate alumni who once struggled themselves, the organization needed more than just a donation portal - they needed a platform that could match students with sponsors, track academic progress, share success stories, and foster meaningful mentor-mentee relationships that extend beyond financial aid.

The Problem

Traditional scholarship programs lacked transparency and personal connection. Donors felt disconnected from the impact of their contributions, students struggled to find relevant opportunities, and administrators spent countless hours on manual paperwork and communication. The alumni network was underutilized, and there was no centralized system to showcase success stories or measure long-term impact on beneficiaries' lives.

Our Goal

Build an end-to-end platform that streamlines scholarship applications, automates donor-student matching based on criteria and interests, enables real-time progress tracking, facilitates mentorship connections, and creates a vibrant community where success stories inspire continued giving. The system needed to handle everything from application submission to graduation tracking while maintaining donor privacy and student dignity.

Process

Conducted extensive interviews with 50+ alumni donors and 100+ students to understand pain points
Designed a role-based architecture supporting students, donors, mentors, and administrators
Built a secure application portal with document upload, verification, and review workflows
Implemented intelligent matching algorithms using Node.js to pair donors with students based on field of study, location, and interests
Created a real-time dashboard for donors to track their scholars' academic progress, attendance, and milestones
Developed a mentorship module with scheduling, video calls, and resource sharing capabilities
Integrated M-Pesa and Stripe for seamless local and international donation processing
Built an alumni success wall showcasing graduate stories, career achievements, and giving-back initiatives
Implemented automated email notifications for application updates, milestone achievements, and community events
Created comprehensive admin tools for scholarship management, reporting, and impact analytics
Optimized the platform for mobile-first usage since most students access via smartphones
Set up automated backup systems and GDPR-compliant data protection measures

Results

Elite Scholars revolutionized alumni giving at the institution. Within the first academic year, 350 students received full scholarships compared to just 45 the previous year.
